Castle of Gibralfaro

The castle of Gibralfaro was used to protect the Alcazaba and to host troops.
In the past, there was a lighthouse at the top, which gives the name to the castle.
It was built in the 14th century.
This castle suffered the siege of the Catholic kings during the time of the reconquest and served as a residence to Fernando the Catholic.
The castle has two lines of walls and eight towers.
On the Mount of the Lighthouse (Gibralfaro) there were ruins before the arrival of the Romans, Abderramán III, transformed those ruins into a fortress.
In 1340 this fort was enlarged by Yusuf I (a Nazarite king) and transformed it into an alcazar.
In the year 1487, the castle, suffered the siege of the Catholic Monarchs and Fernando the Catholic took it as a residence.
The goal for which the Castle was built was to house troops and protect the Alcazaba.
Currently, you can visit it. It also has an interpretation center where you can know the military life of the castle throughout history.
The castle offers the best panoramic views of Malaga.
